Basic Requirements for an Online Nursing Degree

If you want to find success in your nursing profession, you will most likely need to obtain your associate or bachelor's degrees, both of which will require your high school diploma or GED. Some programs may have minimum GPA and test scores as additional requirements.

Some online nursing programs allow you to work while you work towards your degree, so you may already need to be licensed in order to gain your bachelor's or master's degrees.

How long will it take to get Your Nursing Degree in Online Nursing Schools?

Nurses who have graduated with an associate's degree in nursing are eligible to get licensed by the board of nursing in the state of their choice. Once this has been done, they will then become licensed practical nurses (LPN) or registered nurses (RN), depending on the type of licensing examination.

Registered nurses can then proceed to apply for a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree.

Associate degrees can usually be earned in about 18 months. An online bachelor's degree can sometimes be earned in less than the usual four years it would take at a traditional campus.

There are courses designed for working registered nurses to achieve their BSN in 16 months. Accelerated nursing programs are designed specifically to meet the needs of working nurses who want to advance professionally and achieve their career goals.

Potential advanced practical nurses will additionally need to achieve a master's degree in science, which can also be done while working on the side. These could take an additional two years.
